The SPIRIT OF THE LORD is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord ~ Luke 4:18-19

Chris and Deborah, Gabriel and Ashira Maas from Zimbabwe have established the Afrika wa Yesu Vocational Training Center in Nacala, Northern Mozambique. Their passion is to provide life skills and a trade along with personal discipleship and basic business management, equipping men of God who will take the Word along with their new work skills into the workplace.

The Afrika Wa Yesu Vocational Centre empowers Christians with the opportunity of learning a trade with which they can support themselves, educate others, and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through their work ethic and by supporting their Church. The program consists of a three-month training period during which students are discipled in the ways of the Lord, participate in local church life, and taught basic business management skills according to the Word of God, whilst learning a simple trade or vocation, equipping them socially and spiritually.

The Vocational Center consists of a workshop, classroom, two dormitories and bathroom facilities.

The centre opened with its first class in August, 2007, using the classrooms and dormitories of the Discipleship School and a cashew tree for a workshop while construction of the Centre was in progress. God provided funds for construction of a wonderful building which has the classroom, workshop, and living areas all under one roof.

Students are trained in basic business skills and Christian work ethics, emphasising on the Glory of God in Work and the Disciplines of Stewardship. Coverage of the practicalities of business management opens the eyes of the students and understanding comes as they learn how to effectively operate – costing for profit, market research and keeping records among the topics covered in this arena.

Students in the Workshop

Looking to the future, we will add more courses to the school, including electrics, metalwork, and computers, and we will open up business ventures run by the centre in the areas of beekeeping and filling carpentry orders which will help cover operational costs of the centre as well as give the students hands on practice in the business areas they study.

Our follow-up program is being initiated in February, 2009, where we will travel to visit graduates and see how they are progressing and where we can offer encouragement and assistance.

Nacala is a port city on the northern coast of Mozambique. The population is largely Muslim. New converts are often ostracized from their community, “let go” from their jobs and disowned by their families. The Vocational Centre creates an opportunity for them to not only learn the Word of God, but also a work skills opportunity that will enable them to start a new life.

Luke 5:4-7 Jesus said – “Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships.”
